Andy Thomson joins Beijing Guoan as Assistant Coach
- Thomson had most recently been at Academy Director at South Carolina Surf FC
- He has a wealth of experience in coaching and player development across Europe, America, and Australia
Football Careers is excited to see client Andy Thomson join Beijing Guoan as First Team Assistant Coach. He arrives at the Chinese Super League side with a wealth of experience in coaching and player development, gained at clubs across Europe, America, and Australia.
Thomson was most recently Academy Director at South Carolina Surf SC. He has also held roles with Miami AC, Miami FC, Central Coast Mariners, and the U.S. Soccer Federation.
Early in his career, Thomson was Head Coach at St Mirren Youth. There, he helped to develop Scotland international and Aston Villa captain John McGinn, who had glowing praise for him:
“I have worked with some very good coaches in my career and Andy Thomson is up there with the best of them. I loved learning and developing under Andy. He pushed us to win and he was very understanding. Anyone can talk to him, and he has an ability to see what a player can do and the knowledge to improve them and shape them into a winning team.”
Thomson joins Beijing Guoan in time for its pre-season preparations. The Imperial Guards finished the 2025 season in fourth place, narrowly missing out on AFC Champions League 2 qualification.
In his new role, Thomson will be assistant to A-League winning manager Nick Montgomery, who has served under Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham and Nottingham Forest.
This is an exciting opportunity for Andy, and everyone at Football Careers will be following his journey closely. We wish him and Beijing Guoan all the best for the coming years.
