Andy Thomson lands new role at South Carolina Surf
- He joins the club as Boys Academy Director & Head of Coach Education
- Thomson was most recently Head of Senior Development Phase at Lonestar Soccer Club
Football Careers client Andy Thomson has joined South Carolina Surf Soccer Club, taking up a dual role as Boys Academy Director & Head of Coach Education.
Thomson began his coaching career in his homeland of Scotland two decades ago, working through Glasgow City Council to deliver engaging sessions to young players in the area. In 2007, he took up his first coach education position, helping to recruit and develop multi-sport coaches for Renfrewshire Council.
During this time, Thomson also served as Head Coach for St Mirren FC Youth, where he contributed to the development of talented players like current Aston Villa captain and Scotland international John McGinn.
The skilled coach attained a postgraduate degree in Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise in 2008, and moved into coaching and lecturing roles with local colleges. In 2014, an exciting opportunity with US Soccer — working with the national men’s 7-a-side team — brought him to the States.
Since then, Thomson’s career has continued to flourish. Having now coached in over 150 senior professional matches across three continents, the UEFA A Licence holder has made his mark on the American soccer landscape.
Joining San Antonio FC in its inaugural year as First Team Coach & Director of High Performance, Thomson played a key role in building the club into the USL Championship powerhouse it is today. In 2021, while First Team Assistant Coach & Interim Head Coach at Miami FC, he was instrumental in leading the club to the USL Championship playoffs for the first time in its history.
Thomson has also coached at the collegiate level in the USA, helping to steer Florida International University’s men’s soccer programme into the NCAA DI top 25, with several players earning MLS SuperDraft invitations.
Now, at South Carolina Surf, Thomson will use his exceptional expertise in player development, periodisation, and soccer methodology to nurture youth players in the club’s prestigious academy programme.
We’re delighted for Andy and we wish him and South Carolina Surf the very best for the future.
