Football Careers client Anthony O’Neill has been appointed Senior Men’s Team Manager of Mayo FC ahead of the launch of the new FAI National League.
O’Neill takes charge at a pivotal moment as Mayo FC prepares to establish itself within the evolving structure of Irish football. Known for his modern coaching approach and strong player development background, O’Neill is expected to bring clear identity, structure, and ambition to the club.
A Sport Management graduate of Union University in Tennessee, O’Neill spent four years playing college football in the USA. He holds coaching qualifications from the United Soccer Coaches Association.
After returning to Ireland to get involved in grassroots coaching, O’Neill completed his UEFA A Licence with the Football Association of Ireland in 2021. Additionally, O’Neill has experience working with Cruyff Football in Salou, Spain, and he is currently an ambassador for the Ekkono Method, a comprehensive football training methodology developed in Barcelona.
O’Neill’s coaching journey has been shaped through his time at League of Ireland Premier Division club Galway United, where he held roles across both the academy and first-team environments. Working within the academy system, he played an important role in developing young players, focusing on technical growth, game understanding, and progression into senior football.
His transition into a first-team coaching role at Galway United further strengthened his profile, exposing him to the demands of senior football, match preparation, and high-performance environments.
Speaking on his appointment as Senior Men’s Team Manager of Mayo FC, O’Neill said:
“This is a hugely exciting opportunity to build something meaningful. Mayo FC has the potential to represent the region with real pride, and I’m looking forward to developing a team that reflects hard work, identity, and ambition on the pitch.
“We want to be a team that plays with real intensity and purpose. Out of possession, we’ll be aggressive, organised, and difficult to play against — pressing with intent and working as a collective. In possession, the aim is to be structured but forward-thinking, move the ball with clarity, and create chances consistently.
“Just as important is the physical side of the game. We want players who can sustain high intensity, dominate duels, and impose themselves for the full 90 minutes. That’s something we’ll build into everything we do, both on the training pitch and in matches.
“There’s a big opportunity here at Mayo FC to create a strong identity that represents the region properly, and that’s what we’ll be working towards every day.”
Mayo FC’s entry into the FAI National League represents a major step forward for football in the region, and O’Neill’s appointment signals a clear intent to build a progressive, competitive environment from the outset.
With a strong grounding in player development and experience within the Irish game, O’Neill now takes on the challenge of shaping Mayo FC’s identity and establishing the club within the national landscape.
