Bryan Scales joins Houston Dynamo FC as Academy General Manager

  • Scales has a wealth of experience in American soccer, having held key roles at professional clubs and leading universities since beginning his coaching career in 1991

Football Careers is thrilled to see client Bryan Scales appointed Academy General Manager at Houston Dynamo FC. He joins from Charlotte FC, where he had been Executive Director – Academy since February 2022. 

Scales brings over 30 years of experience in soccer. Early in his career, he coached student-athletes at a range of renowned universities in the USA, serving as NCAA Division I Head Men’s Soccer Coach at Cornell University from 1998 to 2008.

In 2009, Scales became Director of Youth Development at New England Revolution. During his 11-year tenure, Academy graduates played more than 25,000 MLS minutes, and upwards of 40 players received call-ups to U.S. youth national teams.

While Executive Director of Charlotte FC’s Academy, Scales helped several players land contracts with professional clubs. The USSF A Licensed coach also established key initiatives like the Academy Day-Stay Program and Academy Residency Program.

Houston Dynamo’s President of Soccer Pat Onstad told club media:

“Bryan brings extensive experience from the professional, international, and collegiate levels, having worked with top academies and programs at Charlotte, New England, U.S. Soccer, and Cornell University.

“He is a proven leader in the academy space, with a track record of developing high-level players such as Diego Fagúndez, Noel Buck, and Nimfasha Berchimas.

“He joins an Academy that has made significant progress in recent years, leading MLS NEXT Pro in Academy minutes played, producing players for youth national teams and top college programs, and advancing Matthew Arana to the first team.

“We welcome Bryan and his wife Mindy to Houston and look forward to working together to accelerate the development of local talent and move more players from our community to the highest levels of the game.”

Scales’ will oversee all aspects of the Dynamo Academy, including its MLS NEXT squads, an online school program, player identification projects, and college placements.
