Charlie Adam joins Everton as Set-Piece Coach
- The ex-midfielder was mostly recently manager of Fleetwood Town
- Also new to the coaching staff is Alan Irvine, who was recently appointed assistant manager

Charlie Adam is settling into an exciting new role as Set-Piece Coach at Everton.
Adam moved into coaching following his retirement from playing in 2022, and was most recently manager of Fleetwood Town until his departure in December 2024.
Before turning his focus to coaching, Adam enjoyed a 19-year playing career that included stints at Liverpool, Blackpool, Stoke City, Rangers, and Dundee. The ex-midfielder also earned 26 caps for Scotland after being called up to the national squad by then-manager Alex McLeish in 2007.
Adam became known for his exceptional set-piece delivery, and played a key role in Blackpool’s promotion to the Premier League in 2010.
His free-kick and corner-kick abilities caught the attention of former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who, after a match between Blackpool and United, commented that Adam’s corner kicks were “worth £10 million in themselves.”
Now, as an essential part of Everton’s backroom staff, Adam will hope to use his set-piece expertise and skills to make an immediate impact. Everton manager David Moyes has expressed confidence in Adam’s ability to enhance the squad’s set-piece strategy, stating:
“Charlie is someone I have had several chats with since rejoining the club. He will be helping with set-piece situations, an area he excelled in as a player and one I believe he can really help us with now as a coach.”
Also new to the Premier League side’s coaching staff is Alan Irvine, who previously managed West Bromwich Albion and played for Everton between 1981 and 1984. In January 2025, he returned to Goodison Park as assistant manager.
Kevin Thelwell, Everton’s Director of Football, voiced his enthusiasm for both appointments:
“We’re really pleased with the two new additions to David’s coaching team. Set-piece coaches are becoming increasingly common in top-level football, and we’re looking forward to working with Charlie.”
Adam’s wealth of experience and well-established set-piece skills will surely be an asset to Moyes and his coaching staff as they aim to propel Everton forward.
