Charlie Mulgrew appointed manager of Kelty Hearts
- The ex-Celtic and Scotland star most recently led Hamilton Academical's U18 squad
- Mulgrew's former teammate Mark Kerr joins him as assistant manager
Celtic legend Charlie Mulgrew has landed his first senior managerial role as he takes charge of Kelty Hearts.
Mulgrew’s former teammate Mark Kerr joins him as assistant manager at the Scottish League One side. Kerr previously held a player-manager position with Ayr United in the Scottish Championship, while Mulgrew most recently led Hamilton Academical’s U18 squad. He succeeds Michael Tidser, who moved into the head coach role at Dunfermline Athletic earlier this month.
Before turning his focus to coaching, Mulgrew enjoyed a storied playing career, making 428 club appearances and earning 44 caps for Scotland.
A graduate of Celtic’s academy, the 38-year-old began his senior career with the Glasgow giants in 2005 and later returned to the club after spells with Dundee United, Wolves, Southend United, and Aberdeen.
The ex-centre-back started his second stint with Celtic under then-new manager Neil Lennon in 2010. Over six years at the club, Mulgrew made 134 appearances, clinching five Scottish Premiership titles and two Scottish Cups.
In 2016, Mulgrew transferred to Blackburn Rovers. His 80th-minute goal against Doncaster Rovers secured Blackburn’s promotion back to the Championship in 2018 and set a new club record for goals scored by a defender. A 2021 move brought Mulgrew to Dundee United, where he would remain until 2023.
Now, as manager of Kelty Hearts, Mulgrew will seek to use his experience and knowledge to help the club climb the Scottish League One table. Fifth-place Kelty are just three points behind league-leaders Arbroath, with Cove Rangers, Queen of the South, and Stenhousemuir also in a close race at the top of the table.
Mulgrew’s first game at the helm will see him lead Kelty Hearts against Annan Athletic in a home fixture on Saturday 1st February.
We wish Charlie and the Hearts all the best as they begin this new chapter together.
