Darren O’Dea joins Slovan Bratislava as First Team Assistant Coach
- O'Dea has coached at elite clubs like Motherwell, Celtic, and Swansea City
- He joins Slovan Bratislava as part of new manager Yaya Touré's backroom team
We’re thrilled to see Football Careers client Darren O’Dea join ŠK Slovan Bratislava as First Team Assistant Coach.
Before entering coaching, O’Dea enjoyed a 13-year playing career, starting his journey at Celtic. He went on to feature for Reading, Ipswich Town, Leeds United, Toronto, Mumbai City and more.
The central defender won two Scottish Premier League titles, a Scottish Cup, and a Scottish League Cup – all with Celtic. He also made 20 appearances for the Republic of Ireland.
O’Dea’s began coaching while still playing professionally, working with the U16 to U18 age groups at Dundee FC. In 2019, he joined Motherwell as U18s manager.
He then returned to his former club Celtic and went on to hold a variety of roles as U18s Manager, B Team Manager, and Professional Player Pathway Manager. Most recently, O’Dea spent the 2025-26 season as Assistant Manager for EFL Championship side Swansea City.
O’Dea joins Slovan Bratislava under new manager and Manchester City legend Yaya Touré. Bratislava won the Slovak First Football League last season, but failed to move past the league phase of the 2025-26 UEFA Europa Conference League, prompting a change in management.
Slovan Bratislava — nicknamed Belasí (Sky Blues) — is the most successful team in Slovakian football, having won the top-flight title 24 times. They are the only Slovakian team to have won a European trophy, beating Barcelona in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1969.
We’re excited to see Darren’s journey continue and we wish him and Slovan Bratislava all the best for the coming seasons.
