Dean Austin has been named Coventry City FC’s first-ever Sporting Director. He has been working with the newly promoted Premier League side since December 2022 as Head of Recruitment.
Austin is a former player, with a career that spanned from 1989 to 2003. He featured as a defender for Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace, and more, playing over 450 games. He then moved into upper management and coaching in 2003, first developing players at Watford’s academy.
Austin has worked as Head of Development & Recruitment (Southend United), Opposition Analyst & Regional Scout (Bolton Wanderers and Birmingham City), Recruitment Consultant (Blackpool) and Director of Football (St Albans City).
His coaching career has taken him to clubs such as Watford, Northampton, Notts County, Crystal Palace, Reading, Southend, and Farnborough, in a range of assistant and first-team coaching roles.
Austin’s background as a player, coach, scout, and recruitment specialist gives him a unique perspective, and his previous experience at Coventry will serve him well as he steps up to the Sporting Director role.
His experience is underpinned by extensive education in the game, including a UEFA Pro Licence and The FA Level 5 for Technical Directors.
