Diarmuid O’Carroll named U21 Manager at Newcastle, Brian Kerr lands Assistant Manager job at St Mirren
- O'Carroll moves to the Premier League side from St Mirren
- Kerr had been Head of Transition Phase/First Team Coach at the SPFL club
Football Careers is delighted to announce that client Diarmuid O’Carroll has been appointed Newcastle United U21 Manager. He was most recently Assistant Manager at Scottish Premiership side St Mirren.
O’Carroll had been in his role at the Paisley club since February 2022 and since March 2023, he has also been part of the Northern Ireland national team’s backroom staff, working under Michael O’Neill.
He has always held a long-term ambition to become a coach and since retiring in 2018, he has held several roles, including U18s Coach at Motherwell, First Team Coach at Morecambe, and Manager of Glentoran Women.
O’Carroll’s experience, skills, and hard-working attitude make him the perfect appointment for an ambitious club, and we wish both him and Newcastle United all the best for the upcoming seasons.
Football Careers client Brian Kerr will be the man replacing O’Carroll at St Mirren Park, working under manager Stephen Robinson.
Kerr is a former Newcastle United, Motherwell, Hibs, and Dundee player, as well as a former Scotland international. Since his retirement from playing in 2013, he has held a number of coaching roles.
After initially becoming a coach at Albion Rovers, he was appointed first-team manager at the club in 2017. He has also been Manager of East Kilbride and Assistant Manager of Partick Thistle during Gary Caldwell’s management stint.
He also coached at his former club Motherwell, where he was initially U18s Manager before becoming Assistant Manager in 2022 under Steven Hammell. Since last summer he’s been at St Mirren as Head of Transition Phase/First Team Coach.
Kerr’s skill set and knowledge of Scottish football make him the ideal candidate for his new role. St Mirren currently sits fifth in the Scottish Premiership after six games, with eight points. We wish Kerr and the club all the best as they look to improve on last season – where they qualified for Europe for the first time since 1987-88.
