Football Careers is excited to see client Diarmuid O’Carroll appointed First Team Coach at Sparta Prague. He joins the 38-time Czech First League Champions from Newcastle United, where he had been U21s Lead Coach since September 2024.
O’Carroll oversaw a solid campaign for Newcastle’s youth outfit, guiding them to a ninth-place finish in a competitive Premier League 2. Alongside his role at the Northeast club, he has also been a Senior Coach under Michael O’Neill at Northern Ireland.
His coaching career began in July 2016, with an Academy Manager & U20 Coach role at Crusaders. He has also worked as a Director of Coaching at Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club, U20s Manager & First Team Opposition Analyst at Motherwell, and Assistant Manager at both Morecambe and St Mirren before taking on the roles at Newcastle and the Irish Football Association.
O’Carroll had a successful fifteen-year playing career, spanning countries like Scotland, Northern Ireland, England, and Iceland. His honours include two IFA Premiership titles and two Irish League Cups at Cliftonville, as well as two NIFL Premiership titles with Crusaders.
He leaves Newcastle with the well wishes of Academy Director Steve Harper, who said:
“I’d like to thank Diarmuid for his time with us leading the under-21 group. The opportunity to work in Europe is an exciting one for him and we wish him the best of luck as his coaching career continues.
“He is the third Professional Development Phase coach to be headhunted from our Academy for a first-team senior football role in the last 12 months, which demonstrates that our Academy development pathway works not just for players, but for staff too.”
With the club looking to improve on last season’s fourth-place finish, we wish Diarmuid and Sparta Prague all the best for the future.
