Glenn Whelan Appointed First Team Coach at Wigan Athletic
- Whelan played for clubs such as Sheffield Wednesday, Stoke, and Aston Villa
- The former Republic of Ireland international previously coached at Bristol Rovers
We’re thrilled to say that Football Careers client Glenn Whelan has been appointed First Team Coach at Wigan Athletic. The club is currently in League One and sits 14th in the table after six games.
Whelan had an illustrious playing career that included over 100 appearances for two clubs in Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke City. He also went on to play for Aston Villa, Hearts, Fleetwood Town, and Bristol Rovers. He is perhaps most well-known for his spell at Stoke, where he played in the Europa League – scoring a goal in the competition against FC Thun.
His playing career also included four promotions (two from the Championship, one in League One, and one in League Two). Whelan narrowly missed out on an FA Cup Winners medal in 2010-11 when Stoke lost 1-0 to Manchester City in the final. He was also a regular fixture in the Republic of Ireland team throughout his career, gaining 91 caps for his country.
Whelan began coaching at club level during his stint at Bristol Rovers, where he helped the management team with coaching activities. The UEFA Pro Licence holder has also been coaching with the Republic of Ireland since 2022, where he is an Under-16s coach, as well as an assistant.
We’re extremely excited to hear of Whelan’s new appointment with Wigan and can’t wait to see what they will achieve with one another in the coming seasons. Whelan will be working under manager Shaun Maloney, who has worked for Belgium’s national team under Roberto Martinez. The experience and skills of both Whelan and Maloney mean Wigan should be looking to move up the table in the coming months.
