Mason McClelland named U18s Head Coach at Swansea City
- McClelland was most recently Head Coach of Gibraltar side FCB Magpies
- His extensive experience also spans clubs in England and the UAE
Mason McClelland has been appointed U18s Head Coach at EFL Championship side Swansea City.
With over 20 years of coaching experience, McClelland has held a diverse range of roles across academy and first-team football.
He began his coaching career in England, working with Bolton Wanderers’ UK and international academy before taking up a position within the U18s squad at Fleetwood Town.
McClelland’s journey then took him to Dubai City in the United Arab Emirates, marking the start of a seven-year spell with the club. Initially joining as Technical Director, he was quickly promoted to First Team Head Coach, where he helped the squad secure promotion to UAE Division 1.
The UEFA A Licence holder took up a new challenge in 2024, becoming the Head Coach of Gibraltar Football League side FC Bruno’s Magpies. McClelland guided the club to a UEFA Conference League win over Derry City and led them as they took on FC Copenhagen in the match that followed.
In a statement released by Swansea City, McClelland shared his thoughts on his new position:
“Over the course of my career, I have a lot of experience in youth development, then in the last six or seven years of my career, I’ve had a lot of experience working with senior players.
“I’ve had that full range of working within academy set-ups. I understand the pathway to get players through to the under-18s, to the under-21s, and then to the first team.
“I really hope my experience can help further the development of the players. I think individual development is key at this age group.
“One element I really like at Swansea is that there is a lot of movement across the age-groups, which allows players to get out of their comfort zone.
“My job is to help further the development for the under-18s, and help prepare them as a professional footballer — alongside a great group of staff — to help them on and off the pitch.”
