Tom Huddlestone and Birmingham City clinch League One title, setting EFL points record
- The former Tottenham midfielder joined the Blues as a First Team Assistant Coach in 2024
- Birmingham beat Reading's previous total of 106 points to set the new record for an EFL season
Football Careers is over the moon to see client Tom Huddlestone and Birmingham City claim the League One title, setting a new record for points in an EFL season in the process. The Blues saw off the competition to get 111 points and seal promotion straight back to the Championship.
Huddlestone joined Birmingham at the start of the 2024-25 season as First Team Assistant Coach to Chris Davies, former Assistant Coach to Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur.
Huddlestone retired from playing in 2024, after an excellent career that began in 2002. He secured his first senior contract at Derby County before playing for Tottenham, Wolves, Hull City, and Manchester United (in a player-coach role).
After beginning his coaching career at Manchester United, where he attained his coaching badges, Huddlestone spent time at Wigan Athletic as a First Team Coach before being asked by Davies to join Birmingham City. Since August 2024, Huddlestone has also been an assistant coach within England’s national U21 squad.
Birmingham were favourites to win League One this season, but exceeded even those expectations. Thirty-four wins, nine draws, and three losses saw them finish on 111 points — breaking Reading’s 106 point total from the 2005-06 Championship season.
Birmingham had the most goals in the league with 84 and the best defence, conceding just 31 goals in 46 games. Standout performances from players such as Jay Stansfield (the club’s top goalscorer), former Celtic midfielder Tomoki Iwata, and Austrian central defender Christoph Klarer saw Birmingham City fly back into the second tier of English football.
Football Careers applauds the effort from Birmingham City this season, and wishes them success in the Championship and beyond.
