- McArdle — who was most recently Head of Women’s Elite Football at the Scottish FA — was appointed to the Northern Ireland role following a recruitment campaign by Football Careers
After a recruitment campaign by Football Careers, Michael McArdle has been appointed Senior Women’s Team Manager for Northern Ireland.
Football Careers was retained by the Irish Football Association and tasked with finding the right manager to lead Northern Ireland’s senior women’s team in the next phase of its development.
From a shortlist of several outstanding candidates, the Irish FA selected McArdle following a comprehensive interview process.
McArdle joins from the Scottish Football Association, where he has been Head of Women’s Elite Football and Scotland WU23 Head Coach since January 2023. The UEFA Pro Licence holder also served as interim Head Coach for Scotland’s senior women’s team between December 2024 and May 2025.
In his role as Head of Women’s Elite Football, McArdle was responsible for designing and implementing high-performance programmes and player progression pathways from the U16 to senior levels.
He has overseen the development of many talented players, including Leah Eddie and Mia McAulay (Rangers Women’s FC), Emma Lawton (Celtic FC Women), Eilidh Adams (Hibernian FC Women), Emma Watson (Manchester United Women FC), and Kirsty Maclean (Liverpool FC Women).
Since beginning his coaching career in 2007, McArdle has held various Academy coaching and leadership roles with Clyde FC, Falkirk FC, and St Mirren FC. He was also Assistant Manager of Ayr United FC and Falkirk FC, overseeing successful spells at both clubs.
Michael said of the appointment:
“History and ambition both attracted me to this role, alongside a strong alignment of values and the challenge ahead.
“This is a group in transition, with exciting young talent developing at international level while remaining competitive. There is a good balance of experience alongside a generation of players currently breaking through, and I want to support them with the elite-level structures needed to turn that potential into a consistent national standard.
“Supporters can expect a team that is disciplined, brave in possession, and relentless without the ball, continuing to reflect the hard-working character that defines Northern Ireland teams.”
Angela Platt, Director of Women’s Football at the Irish FA, commented:
“We were delighted to work with Football Careers throughout the recruitment process for our new Senior Women’s Team Manager. Their professionalism, sector knowledge, and diligent approach ensured we attracted a high‑calibre field of candidates for this pivotal role. We are thrilled to welcome Michael to the Irish FA and look forward to the impact his expertise will have within our Senior Women’s team and girls’ pathway programmes.”
Michael will begin his new role on 1st April 2026. With the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers underway, this is an exciting time for Northern Ireland’s senior women’s team.
We look forward to seeing what Michael and his squad will achieve together, and we wish them the very best for the coming seasons.
