Peter McDonnell’s Philadelphia Union Claim Generation Adidas Cup Title
- It's the second year in a row that Philadelphia Union have won the competition
- Peter McDonnell's side drew 2-2 and won 5-4 on penalties in an all-MLS final with LA Galaxy
Football Careers client Peter McDonnell’s Philadelphia Union have won the Generation Adidas Cup. His under-17s defeated LA Galaxy in the final on penalties (5-4) after playing out a 2-2 draw in a 70-minute tie.
The Generation Adidas Cup is an MLS-run competition for the under-17 sides in the league, focused on developing homegrown talents. The competition has also invited international sides to test the young American talents – with teams such as Flamengo, River Plate and Valencia all taking part in recent years.
The final itself was an entertaining affair. Philadelphia took the lead late into the first 35-minute half after forcing a turnover in LA Galaxy’s half. The Los Angeles side then found themselves in command of the game after scoring two goals in quick succession after the break. It didn’t take long for the Union to equalise though, and the game remained that way until the end of extra time – with the goalkeepers for both sides pulling out some noteworthy saves to keep their sides in the game.
McDonnell’s side had arguably the toughest route to the final, playing three international sides in their knockout games. Philadelphia had to navigate ties with South Korea’s Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, Croatia’s Hadjuk Split and a semi-final against Brazil’s Flamengo (coached by former Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis) in order to face fellow MLS side LA Galaxy in the final.
Football Careers is delighted to see the success Peter McDonnell is having at the east coast club and can’t wait to see what the future brings.
