Darren Kelly joins York City FC as General Manager
- The UEFA Pro Licence holder starred for York City in his playing days and has previously held coaching roles within the club
National League side York City FC has announced the appointment of Darren Kelly as General Manager.
Kelly, a former defender who has appeared for Northern Ireland’s U21 national team, began his playing career with Derry City. He spent six years at the League of Ireland Premier Division outfit before going on to play for the likes of Carlisle United, Garforth Town, Portadown, and York City, where he now returns to take up his new role.
Since making the transition from player to coach, Kelly has lent his coaching expertise to a number of clubs across England. The Football Careers client was Technical Development, Youth Development, Professional and Senior Development Phase Coach at Sunderland prior to securing the position of First Team Manager at Oldham Athletic in 2015. He also has first-team managerial experience with Hyde United and Scarborough Athletic.
The seasoned coach is a graduate of VSI’s MSc in Sports Directorship programme and he has held Sporting Director roles with Newport County and Hartlepool United, where he played a key role in first-team player signings. In addition to his Master’s degree, Kelly has also attained a Diploma in International Sports Management from the University of Salford and a Diploma in Football Management, Evaluating Performance, and Creating a Culture of Excellence from the LMA School of Football Management.
Kelly has a unique knowledge and understanding of York City. In addition to having starred for the club as a player, the Football Careers client previously worked within its Academy as Head of Youth Coaching and Youth Development Phase Lead Coach, as well as with its senior players as First Team Coach and Fitness Coach. Kelly commented:
“I’ve always watched the club from afar because of my connections with the club, but I’m really excited and looking forward to the challenges ahead. I’m looking forward to taking the club forward in every way, on the pitch and off of the pitch.”
York City’s next fixture will take place at home against Boreham Wood on Saturday 9th September.
